In 2024, Racesafe announced a new partnership with HEROS Charity, an organisation committed to retraining and rehoming ex-racehorses whilst offering specialised equine education for Special Educational Needs (SEN) students. This unique combination of equine welfare and SEN training exemplifies how horses and students can mutually benefit from a second chance.
A Second Chance for Horses and SEN Students
At HEROS, the focus is on creating second chances—not just for ex-racehorses transitioning from their racing careers, but also for students who may find it challenging to thrive in traditional educational settings. Through equine therapy and tailored education, HEROS provides a supportive space for students to grow in confidence and develop practical skills.
Erin, one of HEROS’s students, reflected on her life-changing journey:
“Life before HEROS was hard and stressful,” she admitted.
Since joining HEROS, Erin has experienced an environment that fosters understanding and personal growth, helping her build confidence and gain valuable skills for her future.
Similarly, Moss, another student, shared her transformation:
“Before I came here, I had no idea about any of it. Now I’m planning on doing it as a job.”
Moss struggled with depression after completing her GCSEs but found purpose and direction through HEROS’s programs. She is now pursuing a diploma and planning for a future in the equine industry.

HEROS Charity’s post-16 diploma courses are specifically designed for SEN students with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs). These programs equip students with practical skills in horse care, riding, and stable management, as well as industry-specific knowledge, helping them explore fulfilling careers in the equine world.
The dedicated HEROS tutors and the calming presence of horses have been transformative for many students. By blending hands-on experience with a nurturing educational environment, HEROS ensures students are prepared for careers while also promoting the welfare of the horses they care for.
